THIRTEEN
Back at my place after a fantastic meal at the Victorian, Maisy and I had a chuckle or two over the meeting with Letha. The scene was repeated a couple of times as we ran into other locals who simply didn't recognize the lovely lady with me. I enjoyed introducing each of them to my dear friend, Madison, and let them all speculate on just how dear that friendship might be. Mike Miller, who had literally known Maisy since he was a toddler, didn't bat an eye when I introduced him to her, and I decided that my usual comparison between him and Barney Fife (you know, the comically inept deputy sheriff on the old Andy Griffith TV show) was probably pretty accurate.
It was only a little past seven thirty, not at all late for either of us, and I made us each a coffee with the usual fire cider and took them into the living room, setting one mug on the table next to Maisy. Baggins, who might be my cat but seemed to be somehow enraptured by Maisy, jumped onto her lap as he always did when she was there.
âSo what did you find?â Maisy asked. âUpstairs, I mean.â
âOkay, there's an alcove at the top of the stairs, on each side, and each of them is flanked by a pair of mahogany pillars. The one on the right, above the right flight of stairs, had this little abraded mark on it, so I got down to look closer and found that some of the spindles that hold up the banister on the stairs have similar marks.â
âMayhap they could be from getting hit by the mop or something.â
âIâm not sure.â
For a couple of minutes we both sat with our own thoughts, then I sucked in a deep breath and exhaled loudly. âOkay, let's tackle this logically. Who has motive?â I ticked them off on my fingers as I listed them. âLet's start with Kristie, because of the fact that her husband was cheating on her. That alone could be motive, but then we have to look at the fact that she's going to collect on a big life insurance policy, too.â
âHow much?â Maisy asked, and I realized that I hadn't filled her in about Clark's earlier visit. I brought her up to date on that rather quickly, then ticked off the next finger.
âWe've also got Gordon Nolet, and I'd have to say that blaming Leon for his daughter's suicide could be considered a motive for murder.â
The next finger. âWe've got Audra, who might have motive if Leon broke a promise to her, the way he did to Janice Nolet.â
Another finger. âThere's always the possibility that we've got yet another woman Leon cheated with, or maybe an angry husband or boyfriend. For that matter, one of the other employees might have had it in for him. There seems to be no shortage of possibilities.â
âLet's just stick with the ones we know, for right now,â Maisy said. âThat means Kristie, Audra or Gordon.
